Beat and Rhyme came back from vacation a few days later, and the first thing Beat did was nearly crush me in a strangle hold and give me a noogie.

“Phones, why didn’t you tell me you ‘n Shiki had a thing?!” he demanded to know as I tried to get out of his grip.

“It was kind of obvious, Beat...” Rhyme said, making no attempt to help me.

“I didn’ notice nothin’, yo,” Beat replied, finally letting go and leaving me recover.

Rhyme just smiled at me. “Shiki called me and told me. I wasn’t surprised, but Beat...” She looked over at him and it answered all questions.

He freaked out for a moment before gaining whatever composure he normally had. “So, have you shown her want your house looks like yet?”

I had no idea how he got to there. “Uh, no? Why?”

“Well, we ain’t seen it, so I was wonderin’ if she got special girlfriend rights or something, yo.”

“Beat, I haven’t seen your house either.” Come to think of it, the only one of my friend’s houses that I had seen was Joshua’s. That seemed a little off to me.

“Yea, well...” He scratched the back of his head. “One of our folks is always home.”

“Beat and I kind of stay around Shibuya and do homework at cafes and stuff,” Rhyme said simply, “A lot of the people there know us now so they don’t really mind...”

“Well, uh...” Now I felt kind of backed in. “I guess you guys could come over sometime.”

Beat grinned. “Great! Next weekend we’re meetin’ up at Phone’s house!”

“Wait, wha--”

He slapped me hard on the back. “Come on, Phones, it’ll be fun! Now had over your address, yo.”

What had I gotten myself into?

My parents were almost never home, so when I took my friends to my house for the first time, they met Kisa. Kisa was someone my parents had hired to take care of me. She had pretty much raised me, but that had gotten old once I reached my teen years and I said more than one thing that I regret now. Since I got back from the game, she’d been demanding to meet the people who made me ‘less of an emo kid.’

The very first thing that happened was Beat being... well, Beat. Kisa acts kind of like a maid as well, and Beat forgot to take off his shoes.

“Young man, you take off your shoes this instant!” she reprimanded the instant Beat stepped into the house.

He looked down and back up at her with a shrug. “Hey, no big deal, yo! Chill out ‘bout it.”

She gave him a look that always made me cringe, because I knew a lecture was saw to follow. Beat, however, didn’t know this, and might not ever because Rhyme read the warning signs and moved in front of him. “I’m really sorry about him...” she said apologetically. Kisa observed her and decided she liked this particular friend of mine.

“You’re not to blame, dear. Are you two siblings?” Rhyme nodded, looking a little curious. “I thought so. And I imagine you have some trouble keeping up with him.” Kisa eyed Beat in an annoyed manner. “Teenage boys are a handful. Trust me, I know. But I can give you some tips.”

Rhyme beamed, and I could tell already that these two were going to get along great.

“What they talking ‘bout, man?” Beat asked, scratching the back of his head.

They kept talking until Shiki arrived, carrying Mr. Mew. Once they had been introduced, Kisa gave her a very thorough looking over before declaring it was nice to meet her. It felt like she was giving her approval for us to get married or something.

Of course, Joshua was the last person to show up. Before I had a chance to introduce him, he had strode over and said, “Why hello, you must be Kisa. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

She looked at me before looking back at the silver haired jerk. “Who are you?”

“Oh, no one special,” he said with a giggle, “just the god of the dead.”

Now might be a good time to mentioned that Kisa is very superstitious. The entire week after I ‘came back from the dead’ she was convinced I was a zombie and followed me around with any form of evil purification that she could find. So when Josh said that, she vanished and didn’t return until she found rosary beads and a whole lot of garlic. The Composer, unsurprisingly, found it all very amusing.

I sighed. “Come on, I’ll show you around.”

My house wasn’t a castle or anything, but for Shibuya it was still pretty huge. I never got why we had such a big house-- I was an only child and the only person who ever stayed here outside of the family was Kisa, and that had only been when I was younger. We could have easily just stayed in a small house or an apartment, but for some reason we lived... here.

“Phones, this place is huge!” Beat said as we looked around.

“Uh... yea, I guess,” I replied, a little awkwardly. We hadn’t even made it upstairs yet.

We finally made it up to my room (upstairs was faster to go through-- any rooms occupied by my parents on a regular basis are off-limits), and Beat immediately found my video games.

“Got Brawl, yo?” he asked.

I ended up not needing to say anything, because he found it and started it up in about ten seconds. “There are five of us and only four controllers,” I pointed out.

Shiki giggled. “It’s ok, I can switch off with someone. I’m not very good at video games.”

“Me too,” Rhyme said, smiling, “Shiki and I can be partners!”

“Well, ok then.” I turned to look at Joshua, who just seemed... very confused. “You’ve played video games before, right?”

He just looked at me. I figured that was a no.

I handed him a controller and pointed out the controls. “Ike and Pitt are better good ones for beginners, too.” We got to the selection and I snagged Metaknight before Beat could.

We played for a while until Kisa finally came up and told us what time it was. Joshua (having managed to win several of the later rounds) waved goodbye, and Shiki and Rhyme said goodbye and walked out chatting. Beat stuck around for a minute.

“Phones? Can I talk to you ‘bout somethin’?”

“Sure,” I said, “What’s up?”

He rubbed the back of his neck, looking worried.

“It’s ‘bout Rhyme.”
