Title: In The Next Life, Chapter 1
Series: Kingdom Hearts/The World Ends With You crossover
Pairing/Character: Genfic mostly around Axel
Rating: PG-13 at most
Summary: What happens to Nobodies when they die? Who knows, maybe they get to play a game...
AN: I actually really don't like this first chapter. XD; But oh well, we'll see how it goes.
Axel groaned, rolling over and pushing himself off the ground. This didn’t look much different from where he had been dying a moment ago, but it had a distinct lack of... everything. It wasn’t quite darkness, it was merely Nothing.
That seemed a little off to him.
Though he supposed it shouldn’t have. Nobodies were the living embodiment of Nothing, so it would only make since that when they faded that there was no real place for them. Seemed like a real bore.
He started walking, for a lack of anything better to do if nothing else. But there was something else- there was a feeling that he felt like he should move. Whatever the case, he just kept walking until he heard an echoing voice.
“What is it that you value most?”
He stopped for a moment then, looking around with a raised eyebrow. He’d had damn enough of this already. “What was that?”
The voice repeated itself. “What is it that you value most?”
Axel shook his head, hands on his sides. “I think you misunderstood. That was a ‘what was that’ meaning ‘why the hell should I tell you’?”
The strange voice seemed to laugh (it was an eerie and almost feminine), the sound reverberating around him. “Interesting. Exactly as you used to be, even in death.”
The redhead waved a hand vaguely. “I’m just full of surprises.”
“Oh, I can tell,” the voice said, seeming amused, “But you need to answer the question, or you won’t be able to play my game.”
“Who knows, maybe I’m sick of games,” the nobody replied.
“I think you’ll like this one~” the voice chimed, “If you win, you get to come back to life.”
Axel paused, looking over to where he thought the voice was coming from. “...What’s the catch?”
“If you lose, you vanish. For good. Which is the same thing that happens if you decide not to play.”
The redhead sighed. “How do you play this game of yours?”
A little later and with a slight groan, Axel sat up from the ground with a rub to his temples. Ok, so. Game, win to to get back to life, fight these things called noise. Got that. But there was something about an entry fee. What the heck was that?
Something about a promise. Next life? He had no idea, but to figure it out he’d have to play through this game.
So... rules. It took him a moment to remember what he was supposed to- complete the missions, survive the seven days. And something about... oh yea, a partner. Needed a partner to beat the heartless looking things called Noise.
“Well, then,” he muttered to himself, “We had better get started. First, finding a partner. Well, this should be fun.”
Seeing as most of the people couldn’t see him, he assumed that it wouldn’t be too hard to find a partner. This turned out to be a bad assumption. He’d been late in waking up apparently, so most people in the Game already had partners. He ended up wandering around, looking for anyone who didn’t have a partner and running away from any Noise that tried get him during that time. This was going to be fun.
He ended up by a statue of a dog before he discovered the pins in his pockets. “What the hell...?” he muttered. One of them looked like it had flames (he liked the look of that) and one looked like his chakrams. That was interesting, but he couldn’t for the life (or death) of him figure out what they were for.
One looked a little different. Black background with some weird skull on the top. He considered it for a moment before shrugging, closing his hand around it.
As soon as he did, voices flooded his head. If he could have been surprised, he certainly would have been. But since he couldn’t, he just went ‘huh’ and pocketed the pins again.
“Hey, radian!”
Axel didn’t pay much attention, but apparently he was being spoken to because there was suddenly someone in his face. “Pact!”
He raised an eyebrow at the man. “What?”
“A pact, you zetta son of a digit! I need a partner.”
Son of a digit? That was a new one. Slowly, the nobody grinned.
“Sure, why not, partner~”
